When calculating a chart, the Ascendant is calculated (which gives the outer personality of the subject) and opposite to this exists the Descendant. The semi-circle above the line between these points represents the visible heavens. Bisecting this line generates the meridians. The Upper Meridian is known as the Medium Coeli (MC) - the zenith of the heavens - and the Lower Meridian as the Imum Coeli (IC) - the nadir of the Heavens. There are different systems utilised within astrology for the calculation of charts and the midheaven is used as a basis of calculation for these. Planets in the 10th House, especially those that are by the Midheaven, are important to the individual's qualities and activities. The subject will often express those qualities publicly, considering them 'givens' of good behaviour. The ruling planet of the Midheaven is very important as its house position shows where the subject's vocation comes into clear focus. Where the sign has a traditional and modern ruler (such as Scorpio) the traditional ruler is of greater effect. Should both be conjunct the effect will be, of course, much stronger. Each astrological chart and the interpretation is derived from various elements - find out more on these components below:The Midheaven or Medium Coeli in Astrology |
